Student wounded in Ateneo de Zamboanga shooting now in stable condition — police

The student who was wounded in the shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University remains hospitalized but is now in stable condition, according to the Police Regional Office 9 (PRO-9) on Thursday.

PRO-9 spokesperson Police Major Shellamie Chang said the student was grazed by a bullet in the back during the incident.

“Meron po tayong isang injured. Pero nasa stable condition na po yung injured natin. Nadaplisan lang po siya ng bala sa likod. Undergoing po siya ng medication pa rin ngayon sa hospital,” Chang said.

Meanwhile, another student who reportedly collapsed during the shooting has already recovered.

Classes at the school had not yet resumed as of Thursday as authorities continued to investigate the incident, Chang said.

Two students were killed while at least six others were injured in the shooting at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City on Tuesday.

The shooting involved a Grade 8 student who allegedly opened fire inside the campus.

A Grade 10 student was killed inside a classroom, while the suspect later went to the fifth floor of the school building, where he reportedly shot himself.

The firearms used in the shooting were linked to a Bureau of Customs (BOC) personnel, who is the father of the shooter.

Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso earlier said the student who carried out the fatal shooting was reportedly under pressure over his grades and was experiencing depression.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) earlier said the shooter was able to bring firearms into the school by arriving in his father’s car and bypassing the security check.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has formed a Special Investigation Task Group to determine what prompted the shooter to carry out the attack. —VBL, GMA News
