Mayon Volcano ash emission observed; Alert Level 2 still in effect

Mayon Volcano in Albay emitted ash on Sunday morning, generating a 600-meter tall plume above the summit crater before drifting southeast, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The event was recorded on video by the Mayon Volcano Observatory - Ligñon Hill Station (VMLH) and Ligao Station (VMLI) IPCamera at past 6 a.m.

"Alert Level 2 prevails over Mayon and entry into the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone should be avoided," PHIVOLCS said.

Mayon Volcano also had 24 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin issued Sunday.

A crater glow could be fairly seen with the naked eye.

On Saturday, the volcano emitted 841 tonnes of sulfur dioxide and generated moderate plumes that rose 500 meters above the crater before drifting in the southeast and south-southeast directions.

PHIVOLCS said flying aircraft close to the volcano should still be prohibited.

Mayon Volcano, at Alert Level 2, poses possible hazards such as the following, it said:

• sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions
• rockfalls or landslides/avalanches
• lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall
