Civil defense: Floods starting to subside in Oriental Mindoro

Following days of heavy rain, floodwaters are beginning to subside in parts of Oriental Mindoro, the Office of the Civil Defense said Wednesday noon.

But the OCD for Region IV-B is still keeping tabs on Naujan town, where some villages remain flooded and where floodwaters may still rise.

"Catch basin kasi ang Naujan, so most of the time sila ang pinaka-last na nagsa-subside ang tubig," OCD Region IV-B head Eugene Cabrera said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Cabrera said some 22 families who went to evacuation centers in Naujan were residents from nearby Calapan City.

Most of the Naujan residents who evacuated their homes went to the houses of friends and relatives, he added.

Cabrera also said that as of Wednesday noon, the weather had improved, although the water levels in some areas may still rise due to water from nearby mountains.

"Ang plano natin sa island provinces, ang pagpaplano is always preemptive, pag-preposition ng resources," he said. — RSJ, GMA News
