Aquino: May 23 a special nonworking day in Calaca, Batangas
May 23, Wednesday, will be a special nonworking day in Calaca town in Batangas province in honor of the 146th birth anniversary of Gen. Eleuterio Marasigan, locally known as "Heneral Teryo." According to a Malacañang statement on Saturday, President Benigno Aquino III issued Proclamation No. 372 signed last April 27 by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., to let Calaca residents celebrate the occasion. Marasigan, a patriot of libertarian struggle in Batangas, was born in Calaca, Batangas on May 23, 1866. He was popularly called “Heneral Teryo,” and organized the Batallion Maluya under the patronage of Doña Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio, the godmother of revolutionary forces. Also, he was designated Commander-in-Chief of Batangas Revolutionary Forces, with General Miguel Malvar as the Secretary of War. Marasigan died on February 8, 1911. As a way of recognizing his patriotism and that of the soldiers of Batallion Maluya, Marasigan's monument now stands in front of the Municipal Building while a major street in Calaca was named after him. - VVP, GMA News
