Smoking rooms in business establishments in Davao City may soon be a thing of the past, after city officials ordered their removal this week.

Mayor Sara Duterte wants the Davao International Airport to remove its smoking areas too, radio dzBB's Davao affiliate reported Wednesday.

The report said Duterte has the support of her father and former mayor, Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, in her anti-smoking initiative.

Vice Mayor Duterte was quoted in the report as saying the move aims to protect the health of non-smokers, who he said are still affected by the existence of the smoking rooms.

The vice mayor, who gained a reputation for his no-nonsense approach to law enforcement, noted the city has an ordinance banning smoking in public places.

He stressed violators should be caught and punished without exemption. –KG, GMA News
