Areas in Laguna, Cavite in state of calamity due to rain
Some areas in Laguna and Cavite provinces were placed under a state of calamity this week due to the floods caused by heavy rain last Sunday
In Laguna, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council head Jen Zorell Nazareno said Mabitac town is under a state of calamity.
"Ang Mabitac ay catch basin (Mabitac is a catch basin for floodwaters)," Nazareno said in an interview on dzBB radio.
Mabitac was one of the worst-flooded areas in the wake of heavy rain brought by the monsoon enhanced by now-typhoon "Gener" and a shallow low-pressure area that passed by Luzon.
Nazareno said other areas in Laguna may be placed under a state of calamity due to the floods. He cited Sta. Maria in Laguna as one of those areas.
"Maraming infrastructure at pananim nasira sa Sta. Maria," he said.
In Cavite, meanwhile, dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported Bacoor City was placed under a state of calamity.
The report quoted Bacoor public information officer Khei Sanchez as saying 48 villages were flooded and faced more danger from the high tide.
Cavite Governor Juanito Victor Remulla suspended classes province-wide up to the high school level, the Department of Education said. –KG, GMA News
