Towns in Cavite submerged in 8-ft. flood; 1 person missing
By ROUCHELLE R. DINGLASAN, GMA News
Some parts of Cavite’s coastal towns, Bacoor and Rosario, have been experiencing eight foot-high floods since a southwest monsoon inundated Southern Luzon on Monday evening.
As of 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, the provincial government has declared the towns of Bacoor, Kawit, and Rosario under a state of calamity.
Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla told GMA News Online Tuesday that Bacoor has been experiencing four- to eight-foot high floods, while Rosario is swamped with two to eight feet of rainwater.
“Nakadagdag itong ulan kagabi sa pagtaas lalo ng baha dito sa amin. Basang-basa pa ang lupa namin dahil sa bagyo noong nakaraang linggo. Hindi na kayang i-absorb ng lupa namin ang mga pag-ulan kaya mas malalim ang mga nararanasang baha,” Remulla said.
He recalled that during Typhoon Gener last week, some parts of Cavite only felt about four-foot high floods. However, current floods have doubled in height due to the continuous rain on Monday night.
Remulla noted that the floods may still go up as a 0.9-meter high tide is expected to affect coastal towns on Tuesday afternoon.
Some other parts of Cavite including Imus, Kawit, Noveleta, and Cavite City have been experiencing gutter- to waist-deep floods.
One person missing
Meanwhile, Remulla also revealed that a female resident of Noveleta town has been reported missing since Monday evening after falling into a river.
He said that rescue operations have been ongoing as of this posting.
Remulla estimated that some 40,000 families from the coastal towns have been affected by the southwest monsoon, forcing about 3,000 families to seek shelter at an evacuation center.
The provincial government has yet to estimate the extent of damage from the torrential rains.
The provincial government said it may be reached for inquiries and other concerns at the hotline number (046) 419-1311. –KG, GMA News
