U.S. Navy nuclear sub, sub tender, to arrive in Subic Friday, Saturday

A US Navy nuclear submarine and submarine tender are to arrive this weekend in Subic for a routine port call, the United States Embassy in Manila said Thursday. The submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) will arrive Friday, while the submarine USS Asheville (SSN 758) will arrive Saturday. "During their visit, the Frank Cable and Asheville will refuel and receive supplies, and the crew will be given opportunities for community service in nearby areas as well as rest and recreation," the embassy said. It added the visits will "highlight the strong historic community and military relations between the Philippines and the United States." The embassy said the 200-meter-long USS Frank Cable is an L.Y. Spear-class submarine tender that was commissioned in 1980. It has a crew of 1,500. It is the U.S. 7th Fleet’s mobile repair and support platform. "The ship is named after Frank Taylor Cable, one of the pioneers in the development of submarines for the U.S. Navy. ,It is homeported in Guam," the embassy said. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles-class USS Asheville was named after Asheville City in North Carolina and was commissioned in 1991. It measures 91 meters long, and has a top speed of 32 knots underwater. It is homeported in San Diego, California. — DVM, GMA News
