Paper bags, anyone?

Kalibo in Aklan province has followed the lead of certain cities in Metro Manila, as the local municipal council there recently approved the ordinance banning stores from using plastic bags and styrofoam in packaging their goods, a report on GMA News TV's News to Go said Friday.

According to the television report, there have been several information drives regarding the plastic ban in Kalibo for months prior to the decision.

Kalibo's local goverment deemed the ordinance's approval as a step toward lessening the garbage littering the area, most of which are comprised of plastics.

It hopes that citizens and businessmen alike will cooperate in these efforts, the same report said.

Popular tourist destination Boracay Island is also situated in Kalibo. The impending ban on the use of plastic and styrofoam in Kalibo comes some five months after the announcement that the same ban will be imposed on the island. — with Vida Cruz/RSJ, GMA News
