Prices of fish and shellfish from Cavite dropped significantly over the weekend due to the oil spill that affected at least three towns in the province.
Fishermen in Rosario town complained the price of their catch was more than halved, radio dzBB reported early Sunday.
The report said a banyera (big basin) of fish, which used to fetch P1,100, would sell for only P400.
In Parañaque City, vendors at the fisherman's wharf noted a drop in fish and shellfish from Cavite in past days.
But in San Juan City, the report said many people still bought shellfish from Cavite, though some said they were wary that the shellfish may be contaminated.
On Friday, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said the catching and eating shellfish had been banned in parts of Cavite due to the oil spill.
Earlier, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the spill had affected 31 villages in Rosario, Tanza and Naic towns. — ELR, GMA News
