(Updated 11:15 a.m.) Just as they were trying to get their lives back to normal after last week's deadly magnitude-7.2 quake, residents in Bohol and Cebu provinces were jolted early Monday by a powerful aftershock.

In Tagbilaran City in Bohol, some residents ran out of their homes after the aftershock occurred shortly after 7 a.m., radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.

Even some police and civilians filed out of an operations center when they felt the quake, the report said.

A separate report by dzBB's Jasmin Vailoces said the aftershock was also felt in parts of Cebu.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the magnitude-5.4 quake was recorded at 7:03 a.m., with the epicenter at 37 km northeast of Tagbilaran City.

It was felt at:

  • Intensity V: San Isidro, Bohol
  • Intensity IV: Metro Cebu
  • Intensity III: Tagbilaran, Bohol

"This is an aftershock of the 15 October magnitude-7.2 Bohol earthquake," Phivolcs said in its bulletin.

Earlier, the United States Geological Survey initially measured the quake at magnitude 5.3, adding it occurred at 7:03 a.m.

It estimated the epicenter at:

  • 3 km northeast of Balilihan
  • 19km south of Tibigan
  • 20km northeast of Tagbilaran, Bohol
  • 33km northeast of Danao, Cebu
  • 626km south-southeast of Manila

Monday's aftershock came just as residents in Bohol were trying to get their lives back to normal.

The dzBB report said that as of Sunday evening, many in Tagbilaran were starting to go out of their homes again to take a stroll in public places.

Last week's magnitude-7.2 quake has claimed 186 lives and affected 605,350 families or 3,003,001 people in 1,339 villages in 52 towns and six cities in six provinces. — RSJ, GMA News
