A former public school teacher in Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu was found guilty for sexually abusing a second-year high school student multiple times in 1997.

In a statement, the Office of the Ombudsman said a former Pajo National High School teacher, Edgardo Potot was convicted for sexually abusing his then-14-year-old student for four times from July to August 1997.

Potot was found guilty by Judge Eric Menchavez of the Lapu-Lapu City Regional Trial Court for violating Section 5(b) of the Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act, it added.

He was sentenced to reclusion perpetua for each of the four counts, and was ordered to indemnify the victim in the amount of P15,000 as moral damages and a fine of P15,000 for each count, the statement said.

Potot, who remains at large, was also previously convicted in three other criminal cases for the similar offense, the statement added. — Amanda Fernandez/RSJ, GMA News
