Newborn baby did not fall on floor, Cebu hospital says

A hospital in Cebu City has denied that a newborn baby fell on the floor of its delivery room due to the alleged neglect of a nurse supervisor.

According to findings of an internal investigation done by the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), no falling incident occurred at the VSMMC delivery room on the afternoon of September 11, 2014.

The investigation said the nurse supervisor categorically denied the complaint that the mother of the baby was not given immediate attention during her delivery which resulted to the falling of the baby on the floor right after she gave birth to her child.

The nurse supervisor, based on the interview of hospital officials, said she personally attended to the mother of the child during the delivery.

The VSMMC investigation said the nurse supervisor's claim was corroborated by the testimonies of five other hospital staff members present at the delivery room during the time of the alleged incident.

The report said several patients also supported the testimonies of the staff members.

The VSMMC investigation also showed that no injuries were found on the newborn baby, thus, further laboratory tests may no longer be required.

Last week, the family of the baby filed a complaint against the staff of the delivery room, whicn prompted the VSMMC management to conduct an investigation. — Elizabeth Marcelo/RSJ, GMA News
