A 10-year-old boy was shot dead after he was mistaken for a thief at a coconut farm in Tinambac town in Camarines Sur province last weekend.

The incident where the caretaker shot the boy occurred last Saturday in Barangay Binalay in Tinambac town, GMA Bicol's Kaye Botastas reported.

The boy died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police said their initial findings showed the boy entered the coco farm last Saturday with two people who had been linked to past thefts of coconuts.

"Nasa loob sila o pumasok sila sa loob ng isang coco farm. And pinagbintangan sila ng suspek na magnanakaw ng niyog. 'Yung suspek nagsasabi na matagal na umanong nagiging problema ang mga magnanakaw ng niyog. Positibo nga itong kinilala ng suspek na balik ng balik doon," said Inspector Greg Bascuña, offier-in-charge of the Tinambac police.

But the boy's sibling said the fatality was looking for dried firewood.

Suspect Romeo Darilay said the two companions of the victim had been linked to past thefts. "Hindi ko po sinasadya," he said.

Despite his explanation, Darilay may face charges from the victim's family.

Bascuña said the charges they are preparing include murder, child abuse, and attempted murder. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
