Classes at a university in Capiz province were suspended last weekend after a 17-year-old student died from a mysterious disease she may have contracted inside the campus.

The class suspension at the Capiz State University will remain in effect until Tuesday, GMA News stringer Christopher Yu reported.

The 17-year-old had suffered pains in the body, feet and head. She was rushed to the Bailan District Hospital but died. Her father said she died of aspiration pneumonia.

While two other schoolmates—a classmate and a student described in the report as a minor—suffered similar symptoms, they survived.

The university scheduled fogging operations in the campus to get rid of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Meanwhile, Capiz provincial health officer Dr. Samuel Delfin allayed fears of the mystery disease, saying the disease was not contagious.

Delfin also said a girl being treated at a hospital in Roxas City is in stable condition after suffering from encephalitis.

He said they have yet to determine if the encephalitis is bacterial, viral, or toxic in substance. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
