A policeman on Friday rescued a 16-year-old girl who was reportedly abducted in South Cotabato province, but at the cost of his own life.

But SPO1 Florentino Suganob Jr. also shot dead suspected kidnapper Rex Ratonel, GMA General Santos' Jennifer Solis reported on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon" Friday.

Investigation showed a man went to the police at about 9 a.m. Friday and sought assistance, claiming his 16-year-old daughter had been abducted.

Suganob managed to catch up with Ratonel, who had the victim on his motorcycle. The policeman then blocked the suspect's path.

Ratonel allegedly fired at Suganob and hit him, but the policeman managed to return fire despite his wounds.

The rescued girl, traumatized by the experience, is now with the Department of Social Welfare and Development. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
