PNP arrests suspect in 2007 killing of Pangasinan mayor

(Updated 2 p.m.) Police arrested Tuesday night a suspect in the killing of a Pangasinan town mayor seven years ago.

The Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group arrested Salvador Boquerin, 54, in Jala-Jala in Rizal, radio dzBB's Tuesday Niu reported.

Boquerin was identified by a bodyguard of slain San Carlos City mayor Julian Resuello, the report said.

Mayor Resuello was shot and wounded, and eventually died in an ambush at a fiesta in late April 2007.

He and five others were wounded while a civilian aide was killed.

A suspect was initially arrested shortly after the killing but denied involvement in the crime.

Resuello's son Julier, the town's incumbent mayor, went to the CIDG and voiced hopes the case would be resolved soonest.

Police said they are hoping Boquerin could provide information leading to the other suspects in the 2007 killing.

On Tuesday night, police served a search warrant on the house where Boquerin was hiding. They recovered two cal-.38 revolvers from the house.

A record check also showed Boquerin faces a separate charge of rape in Las Piñas City. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
