The University of the Philippines Mindanao this week "honored" a former student leader who was killed in an encounter between soldiers and New People's Army rebels in Sarangani province last week.
In a statement, the UP Mindanao administration also extended its condolences for the death of its former University Student Council chairman Rendell Ryan Cagula.
"The University extends its sincere condolences to the family on his untimely death," it said.
Also, UP Mindanao administration accommodated a request from the University Student Council to allow the holding of a wake in the university premises for Cagula.
It said it allowed the wake at the atrium of the administration building until 9:45 p.m. Thursday.
"This is to honor the memory of Mr. Rendell Ryan Cagula as a student leader," it said.
Cagula was one of three persons killed in an encounter between the Army and NPAs in Sarangani province last Nov. 4, MindaNews reported.
The Army said it recovered nine high-powered firearms following the encounter including four M16 rifles, three M14 rifles, an M-4 rifle and a baby armalite.
A second encounter occurred between the AFP and the NPA bandits at the same place around 5 p.m. No casualty was reported on either side. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
