At least two people were reported wounded after a grenade exploded during an anti-drug operation in Tuburan town in Cebu province last weekend.
Tuburan police were arresting suspected drug dealer Jonal Calaunan when the incident occurred, GMA Cebu's Chona Carreon reported on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon" Tuesday.
During the 6 p.m. Saturday operation, Calaunan reportedly resisted arrest and threatened to hurl a grenade, prompting police to shoot him in the leg.
"Nanlaban ang suspek, bumunot ng hand grenade, kaya’t binaril na lang ng arresting officer," said PO3 Douglas Maravillas Jr., desk officer of the Tuburan police station.
Still, the suspect managed to throw the grenade, which exploded and wounded his male companion.
The blast also damaged some of the houses in the area where the sting operation was held.
Meanwhile, Cebu provincial police Superintendent Rodulfo Albutura said the Cebu police acted correctly.
"Trending ngayon sa anti-drugs operations, they’ve become brutal; lumalaban na sila and they are ready to shoot it out sa ating kapulisan. If given the chance, they will resist," he said.
He added law enforcers "should not hesitate to use necessary force" if their lives and those of civilians are threatened. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
