WATCH: News team trapped as Ruby wreaks havoc in Eastern Samar
Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) wreaked havoc for 15 hours in the Samar provinces after making landfall last night, leaving floods and landslides in its wake.
The water reached up to the second floor of houses in some barangays in Borongan, Eastern Samar, while landslides blocked roads leading to the capitol according to a report in Balitanghali.
GMA News reporter Mariz Umali and her crew got stranded for three hours inside their van as the typhoon started to wreak havoc due to the strong and howling winds. Nobody answered their call for help and they had to wait to be rescued.
Trees, roofs and light vehicles such as motorcycles and tricycles were blown away, and even the team's van shook at the force of the winds before they escaped to the safety of a nearby hotel.
The establishment also took in other victims even without bookings, and some had to sleep in hallways due to the lack of rooms available. The winds, however, did not spare the hotel from damage. Glass doors and windows were shattered, allowing water to enter the building.
On Sunday morning, the water in Lo-om River kept rising due to the heavy rains, endangering houses by the riverbank. By noon, however, the weather has let up as the typhoon moved west-northwestward to Masbate. —Marisse Panaligan/NB, GMA News
