The National Democratic Front has declared a 13-day ceasefire in Surigao del Norte to pave the way for the release of three policemen seized by the New People's Army, a Mindanao news site reported Wednesday.
A report on MindaNews quoted NDF Northeastern Mindanao spokesperson Ka Maria Malaya as saying the local ceasefire would last until January 19.
Up for release are PO1 Democrito Polvorosa and PO1 Marichel Contemplo of the Alegria police station, and PO1 Junrie Amper of Malimono police station.
“This is a supplemental ceasefire to the 10-day ceasefire declared by the NDFP at the national level,” MindaNews quoted Malaya as saying.
Covered by the local ceasefire are Claver, Bacuag, Alegria, and Gigaquit in Surigao del Norte; and Kitcharao town in Agusan del Norte.
But Malaya added the ceasefire will take effect only after the military, police and Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit and paramilitary units cease offensive operations.
Such operations include the Community Organizing for Peace and Development and similar operations.
Malaya said the local ceasefire seeks to prevent a potential encounter between the NPA and government forces, while allowing security for the families of the seized police personnel.
NPAs seized Amper last Nov. 12; and Polvorosa and Contemplo last Nov. 16. The NDF Northeastern Mindanao said it is releasing the three upon request of their families. —Joel Locsin/NB, GMA News
