Social welfare officials in Bacolod City seized this week 67 cash cards of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program after learning they were "pawned" to a local trader in a barangay.
The city's Department of Social Services and Development said pawning such cash cards is prohibited by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, GMA Bacolod's Erwin Nicavera reported Tuesday on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon."
Citing the DSWD's rules, the Bacolod DSSD said the government also prohibits using government funds for gambling and illegal activities.
Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino's Negros Occidental provincial operations office said it already warned hundreds of beneficiaries against pawning their cash cards.
Violators could be kicked out of the program on the third offense.
The GMA Bacolod report said Negros Occidental has some 160,000 beneficiaries. Each beneficiary can receive at least P1,400 a month, depending on the number of children he or she has. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
