Cop, ‘troubled’ teen killed in Laguna mall shooting

A 16-year-old boy who had had brushes with the law shot dead a policeman before being gunned down following a row at a mall in Sta. Rosa in Laguna on Tuesday.

The teen allegedly went amuck after guards refused to let him in SM Sta. Rosa because he had a bladed weapon, GMA News' Ivan Mayrina reported on Saksi.

During his scuffle with mall guards, he reportedly picked up a handgun that dropped to the ground and fired it.

"Tinutok niya sa akin ang baril. Natakot ako, tumakbo ako sa parking lot sa malalaking sasakyan. Pinutok niya sa akin pero 'di ako natamaan," said witness John Mark Herradura.

At the time, police motorcycle patrolman PO1 Ariel Abordo passed by the area and was shot dead by the teen.

"Sa kasamaang palad, natamaan si PO1 Abordo," said Sta. Rosa police head Superintendent Pergentino Malabed Jr.

Other policemen gunned down the teen.

Malabed cited initial information indicating the teen had been in and out of the Department of Social Welfare and Development's custody.

He said the teen had been linked to criminal offenses such as theft, damage to property, and alarm and scandal.

Also, police are now investigating the possibility of security lapses in the mall. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
