(Updated 5:08 p.m.) Soldiers of the Army 7th Infantry Battalion continue to provide military aid to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front as they clash with the MILF's breakaway group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in Pikit, North Cotabato.
GMA News TV's "Balitanghali" reported Saturday that the encounter between the MILF and BIFF is believed to be part of a clan war that began days ago.
MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal clarified that their operations against the BIFF were separate from but were coordinated with the AFP.
According to the Army 6th Infantry Division's public information office, the 7th IB and the MILF encountered the BIFF men in Brgy. Bulol on Friday evening, but that the shelling started at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The 6th Infantry Division said artillery support was provided to protect the 20,000 civilians forced to evacuate due to the encounter.
The MILF and the military have yet to verify the size of the BIFF force and the commander in charge of it. The MILF confirmed that the rebels fighters were involved in a clash with government security forces in Mamasapano, Maguindanao on Jan. 25.
Despite working with the Army against the BIFF, Iqbal said the MILF will not surrender its own members who figured in the Mamasapano incident.
However, they have given back some of the firearms of PNP Special Action Force troopers killed in the clash, which followed a police operation against two terrorists in the area.
The BIFF has refused to do so and has even demanded a "rematch" with the police. BIFF spokesman Abu Misry Mama told GMA News Online by phone that the BIFF will not give the weapons back without a fight. — Rie Takumi/LBG/JDS, GMA News
