Pacquiao's provincemate dies while watching the ‘Battle for Greatness’
A Sarangani resident died last Sunday in Barangay Catubao, Kiamba town while watching his provincemate and Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao fight the undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
A report on GMA-7's "24 Oras" said that 34-year-old Christopher Buday suddenly lost consciousness and hit his head on the ground in the middle of the so-called "Fight of the Century", while he and 1,000 other Pacquiao fans were watching the bout in a covered court.
Buday's friends and the other fans did not immediately notice his predicament as they were glued to the screen watching the fight.
When they finally saw what happened to him, they rushed Buday to hospital, but he had expired. Buday was immediately buried according to Islamic tradition.
Nobody could tell what exactly happened to Buday, not even his widow Siti Baisa. "'Yung pag-alis niya, okay pa 'yung pangangatawan niya. Noong isang araw pa siya nagpaplano na manood talaga kami," she said.
The couple have a five-month old child.
Meanwhile, Buday's mother Racma appealed to their champion and congressman, Pacquiao, and vice governor, Jinkee Pacquiao for financial aid.
"Napakalungkot. Talo na si Manny, may namatay pa... Kung ilan ba ang ibibigay niya na tulong para sa akin kasi may apo ako na inaalagaan at wala naman akong asawa, biyuda naman," she lamented. — Trisha Macas/DVM, GMA News
