Police: Abu Sayyaf linked to Sabah kidnap

Members of the Abu Sayyaf bandit group were behind the abduction of two people at a restaurant in Sabah Thursday evening, Sulu police said Friday afternoon.

The Sulu police also said the kidnappers may have brought their captives to Indanan town in Sulu, GMA News correspondent Peewee Bacuño reported.

Citing police progress reports, Bacuño said two of the four abductors were identified as Abu Sayyaf members Mindas Muktadil and his brother Kadafy Muktadil.

Police said the other two are reportedly followers of Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Alhabsy Misaya.

The four armed men had abducted Thien Nyuk Fun and Bernard Ghen Ted Fen at Ocean King Restaurant in Sandakan, Malaysia at 8 p.m. Thursday.

For the abduction, the four were armed with two M-16 rifles and two cal-.45 pistols, and used a speedboat.

Police said Misaya financed the operation, spending some P1 million.

Meanwhile, police also cited information indicating the abductors may have brought their captives to Sitio Bullo in Barangay Buton Mahablo in Parang, Sulu.

But it was not immediately clear if the captives have been moved again to another area. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
