More than 300 boarding houses in Iloilo found without permits

With just a week to go before the new school year starts, more than 300 boarding houses and dormitories in Iloilo City have been found to lack the permits needed to operate, GMA Iloilo reported Monday.

Owners of the establishments were warned of possible closure if they do not obtain the needed permits.

The report said that of some 963 boarding houses and dormitories inspected in the city, only 605 have the needed business permits and 358 are lacking.

The city government has its own commission supervising the operation of boarding houses. Members of the commission inspect the establishments to make sure they follow fire safety and sanitation standards.

Inspectors check for other requirements including business permits, fire safety certificates, and sanitation permits.

One boarding house in Barangay Villa Anita had no business permit but the owner said the application is still being processed. The owner said his establishment has the needed equipment to deal with emergencies, such as fire extinguishers.

But authorities warned owners of the dorms to speed up their applications for permits.  — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
