Suspected Akyat Bahay gang member gunned down in Davao City encounter

A suspected member of the Akyat Bahay burglary gang was gunned down in an encounter with police in Davao City's Agdao district before dawn Tuesday.

Police said the suspect was accosted by a team of patrolling policemen who found him acting suspiciously, GMA Davao's Jan Bautista reported on GMA News TV's Balita Pilipinas Ngayon.

The suspect reportedly brought a bag and appeared to be observing one of the houses in the area. He had also been linked to past burglaries.

"Meron na kaming record niyan sa mga pagnanakaw. Aside from that, may mga report kami (na) maraming attempts ng pagnanakaw, so ito yung focus namin ngayon na naglilibot. So, pagdaan namin dito, nakita namin na may sumisilip na tao. (Nang) sinita namin, ito na nangyari sa kanya. Nanlaban siya, siya ang nauna," said Sta. Ana police head Superintendent Royina Garma.

Resident Cherry Villegas said there had been several burglaries in the area recently.

Barangay Lapu-Lapu captain Julieto Icoy added recent complaints had involved the theft of laptops that were reportedly sold in Tagum, Davao del Norte.

Recovered from the bag of the suspected Akyat Bahay gang member were a DVD player, speaker, and computer monitor.

A handgun he supposedly used to fire at policemen was also recovered from the scene. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
