PNoy leads renaming of Iloilo roads after Cory, Ninoy

ILOILO CITY, ILOILO – President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday led the renaming of roads in this province after his parents.

 

Aquino, who arrived almost an hour late, unveiled the street markers at the junction of  President Corazon C. Aquino Avenue and Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Avenue in Pavia town.  

 

The roads were named, respectively, after his late mother and former President and his martyred father.

 

Earlier this year, Congress passed the bills authorizing these roads in Iloilo to be renamed. 

 

The President Corazon C. Aquino Avenue covers the circumferential road that starts from the junction of the Iloilo-Dumangas Coastal Road in Jaro town.

 

The Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Avenue meanwhile spans the highway that starts from the Iloilo Diversion Road to the gate of the Iloilo International Airport. This road traverses the towns of Pavia, Sta. Barbara and Cabatuan.

 

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines allows the naming of roads after persons of historical and cultural significance.

 

Ninoy was gunned down at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport on Aug. 21, 1983. The airport now bears his name.

 

His assassination triggered a series of mass protests that led to the EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986. The 1986 revolt catapulted his widow, Corazon, to the presidency.

 

President Aquino meanwhile rose to presidency after an outpouring of public sympathy for his family when Mrs. Aquino died in 2009 – a year before the May 2010 presidential polls.

 

After leading the renaming of the roads, the President inspected the Dungon Bridge IV here. He is scheduled to inspect the Muelle Loney Bridge later this afternoon.

 

On Friday, President Aquino will lead the Independence Day rites in Sta. Barbara town and hold the traditional vin d'honneur at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. – Andreo Calonzo/VS, GMA News
