Amid state weather agency PAGASA's expectations that this week may mark the start of the rainy season, water levels at Angat Dam in Bulacan and five other major dams in Luzon dropped anew Monday.

PAGASA said that as of 6 a.m., Angat's water level was at 174.44 meters, 0.3 meter lower than Sunday's 174.74 meters.

Since late May, Angat - which supplies more than 90 percent of Metro Manila's water needs - had fallen below then 180-meter critical level for irrigation.

The dam's critical water level for drinking water is 160 meters.

Five other major Luzon dams saw a dip in their water levels as of Monday:

  • Ipo: 100.41 from 100.45 meters Sunday
  • Binga: 571.37 from 571.82 meters Sunday
  • San Roque: 237.57 from 237.83 meters Sunday
  • Magat: 184.36 from 184.84 meters Sunday
  • Caliraya: 287.07 from 287.43 meters Sunday

Three other dams, meanwhile, saw a rise in their water levels:

  • La Mesa: 78.78 from 78.77 meters Sunday
  • Ambuklao: 743.43 from 743.29 meters Sunday
  • Pantabangan: 179.89 from 179.87 meters Sunday

Earlier Monday, PAGASA forecaster Manny Mendoza told dzBB radio they expect to declare the onset of the rainy season this week, if there is much rainfall in Luzon. Mendoza noted there had been an increase in rainfall in Visayas and Mindanao. — Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
