A motorcycle joyride during class hours ended in tragedy Monday when a 15-year-old student was killed after crashing the motorcycle he borrowed in San Carlos City, Pangasinan.

Warren Canilang died from head injuries after crashing the motorcycle into a lamppost, GMA Dagupan reported Tuesday.

"Medyo mabilis po siya. Ngayon, may humps po kasi yung  pagkabilis niya, hindi niya na-control yung manibela. Wala siyang helmet," said San Carlos City police spokesperson Inspector Jonaflor Bariuan.

Police investigation showed Canilang borrowed a motorcycle from a friend.

Canilang's relatives also said they thought he was in school at the time of the accident, but it turned out he and his friends went out of the school premises because a teacher was supposedly absent at the time.

The victim's family is coordinating with the school to beef up security at the school.

"Dapat sinisita sila.... During school hours po iyong pangyayari, so dapat hindi sila pinalabas," said the victim's sibling June.

Meanwhile, Bariuan reminded motorcycle riders to always wear helmets and safety equipment.

"Sa mga kabataan na nagmo-motor, kuha lang tayo ng lisensya at maging maingat din po sa pagda-drive," Bariuan said. - Joel Locsin/NB, GMA News
