La Union was placed under a state of calamity on Monday due to damage brought by Tropical Storm Egay, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office told GMA News.

Several parts of the province were flooded over the weekend when Egay brought heavy rain and strong winds.

On Sunday, low-lying barangays in Bacnotan town were underwater due and GMA Dagupan's Joanne Ponsoy reported floods on the national highway in San Fernando City were waist-deep.

Strong winds also caused billboards to crash into a car parked near the city hall and toppled trees and electric posts in Bauang town.

Egay crossed Northern Luzon on Sunday and is expected to linger in the Philippine Area of Responsibility until Thursday. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
