Boy feared dead after falling into river in Pangasinan

A 10-year-old boy scavenging for garbage is feared dead after he fell into the Sinucalan River in Barangay Maningding in Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan on Sunday.

 

Witnesses said the child fell into the river while stepping on a water lily, GMA Dagupan's Alfie Tulagan reported Monday.

 

"Namumulot siya ng plastik, pumunta sa agos. Nahulog bigla, parang nadulas, dire-diretso na pailalim, malakas ang agos," said witness Leo Cayabyab.

 

The child was carried away by the strong current and rescue teams had difficulty finding the child.

 

The Philippine Coast Guard said its Sual station is coordinating with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of Sta. Barbara for assistance.

 

It said an underwater search-and-rescue operation failed to find the boy and was suspended due to strong current and heavy rain. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
