(Updated 3:31 p.m.) A total of 57 students in Esperanza town in Sultan Kudarat were rushed to the hospital on Friday due to another possible case of food poisoning.

According to a report on GMA News TV Live, the students, most of them gradeschoolers, experienced stomach ache, nausea and vomiting a few hours after eating squash fritters or “okoy” bought from the school canteen.

Local authorities are now investigating the incident, the report said.

Meanwhile, the students remain confined in the hospital.

Food poisoning incidents

Just on Thursday, 15 people, including two teachers and 13 students of Sultan Kudarat State University, were also rushed to the hospital after eating a local dish called “pastil” which they bought in front of the university.

That same day in Metro Manila, nine highschool students in Quezon City were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Quirino Memorial Medical Center after experiencing abdominal pains and vomited eating macapuno candies bought from an ambulant vendor.

On Friday, authorities said eight of the nine victims are in stable condition.

Just last week, nearly 2,000 people, including children in Surigao Del Sur, were also hospitalized after eating contaminated durian candies.

On Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the durian candies tested positive for the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus

Health Secretary Janette Garin said the bacteria is commonly found on the skin.

"Sa staphylococcus, depende din sa balat ng tao, singit, o baka nagpunta sa banyo tapos na-contaminate. Bottom line, baka nakakalimutan ng tao pero if we are in food production, hygiene is very important dahil nakasalalay sayo ang nagco-consume ng produkto mo," she said.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, "staphylococcus can cause food poisoning when a food handler contaminates food and then the food is not properly refrigerated. Other sources of food contamination include the equipment and surfaces on which food is prepared." It said the bacteria is killed by cooking and by pasteurization. — Elizabeth Marcelo/RSJ, GMA News
