Nona leaves dozens of families homeless in Albay

Typhoon Nona left dozens of families without a home after it tore through Albay on Monday night, a report on GMA News TV's Balitanghali said Tuesday.

Nona's strong winds and heavy rains swept away at least 50 houses, and peeled away the roofs of other residences, GMA News' John Consulta reported.

Glass panels in some establishments also shattered against the force of the typhoon's onslaught.

The TV report said residents are largely safe inside evacuation centers, except for some that were threatened by trees uprooted by the strong winds after they fell on one of the centers.

Evacuees were successfully brought to safety, but they cannot be reached due to blockage in the roads leading up to the area.

Facilities inside that center were also ruined due to the impact.

But despite the huge amount of destruction left in Nona's wake, the report said there are no casualties recorded in Albay.

According to authorities, the hardest hit area was the agriculture sector. Corn and wheat crops were completely swept away by the 4-meter storm surge.

The local government is continually distributing relief goods and reaching out to those affected by the storm, the report said.

The Coast Guard in the district is also conducting a feeding program, it added. — Jessica Bartolome/RSJ, GMA News
