Authorities raid 3 main detention facilities in Cebu

Authorities seized several plastic sachets of shabu and several other prohibited items during separate raids at the three biggest detention facilities in Cebu province, early Tuesday.

A report on GMA News' Balita Pilipinas said joint teams from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, the Philippine National Police and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency conducted simultaneous raids at the Cebu City Jail, Mandaue City Jail and Lapu-Lapu City Jail at around 5 a.m.

The operatives seized several plastic sachets of shabu, knives and mobile phones from the Cebu City Jail's detention cells.

Appliances, including TVs, DVD players, audio speakers and refrigerators were also seized.

The report said similar items were seized from the Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu city jails.

Superintendent Johnson Calub, warden of the Cebu City Jail, said at least 80 percent of their inmates are facing drug-related charges.

Calub said that the raid was conducted to somehow minimize the prohibited items within the detention facility.

He said they are doing their best to stop the smuggling of prohibited items into the facility.

Calub said they are closely monitoring a number of visitors who may be involved in the smuggling. —ALG, GMA News
