Bayawan, Negros Oriental under state of calamity due to El Niño

The city of Bayawan in Negros Oriental was placed under a state of calamity due to the effects of El Niño, a report on Balitanghali on Thursday said.

Damage was estimated to cost more than P100 million, data from the City Agriculture Office showed.

More than 1,000 hectares of ricefields were also affected.

Even pig pens and chicken farms have felt the effects of the dry spell, the report said.

Some cows and carabaos also died due to heat stroke.

The local government said it will give food aid to affected residents. —KG, GMA News
