President Rodrigo Duterte's son and Davao City vice mayor on Wednesday joined the Muslim community in Mindanao and in the whole world in prayer for peace and reconciliation on Eid'l Fitr or the feast concluding the holy month of Ramadhan.

In a statement obtained by GMA News Online, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte said, "On behalf of Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Caprio and the people of Davao City, allow me to extend our warmest wishes to our Muslim brothers and sisters celebrating Eid'l Fitr."

"We join them [Muslims] in praying for a meaningful reconciliation and the end of conflicts in Mindanao and many other parts of the world now besieged by suffering brought by acts of war and terrorism," he added.

He also cited the contributions of the Muslim community in the growth and development of Davao City.

"Over the years, many Muslims here have shown leadership and inspiration to others -- breaking the walls of diversity and crushing hostile relationships built on discrimination and mistrust," he said.

Moreover, he said the central message of Ramadhan and Eid'l Fitr is peace. "Eid Mubarak!"

Last July 4, President Duterte issued Proclamation No. 6 declaring July 6, Wednesday, a non-working holiday in observance of Eid’l Fitr.

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated by the Muslim world for three days after the end of the month of fasting. It is the first day marking the end of the 30-day fasting period of Ramadhan. — LBG, GMA News
