1,240 Chinese nationals nabbed in Pampanga over alleged illegal online gambling

Authorities have arrested a total of 1,240 Chinese nationals allegedly involved in illegal online gambling operations inside a posh rest and recreation area in Clark, Pampanga.

“As of 2 a.m. today, our immigration unit have counted a total of 1,240 Chinese nationals arrested in the operation,” Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said in a statement issued Friday.

Morente said the documents of the foreigners were being checked based on reports the Chinese nationals illegally entered and work into the country.

In its report to Morente, BI's Fugitive Search Unit said the operation against the Chinese involved police units led by Angeles City director Senior Supt. Sidney Villafor.

Also part of the operation were the PNP-Special Action Force and the Department of Justice Office of the Cybercrime.

The arrested suspects were confined in a place secured by elements of the SAF.

A report by GMA News’ John Consulta said the operatives immediately disarmed the guards of the facility. Some Chinese nationals were then seen trying to escape through windows and backdoor and by going up the roof.

Others arrested were caught in the act of conducting online gambling.

When authorities checked their papers, they learned that most of those arrested were carrying tourist passports but working in the country.

“We were able to see that they are really here working. They will be properly charged and accordingly the Board of Commissioners will deliberate and will issue deportation order against them,” Jose Carlito Licas, chief of BI Fugitive Search Unit said in an interview. — Amita Legaspi/RSJ, GMA News
