Catmon, Cebu police chief dies after trying to break up fight
The chief of police in Catmon, Cebu died after he tried to break up a fight, a report on News To Go on Tuesday said.
Sr. Insp. Alexander Nuñez died on Saturday past 4 p.m. after he responded to a commotion in Brgy. Puente in the next town of Carmen, GMA News Cebu's Alan Domingo reported.
Police reports said two groups were then fighting and Nuñez accosted one of the men who held a gun.
The man fired the gun at him but it misfired.
Nuñez then fired his gun and hit one of those in the rumble, a man identified as Carlito Jayson.
His groupmates then mauled Nuñez until he passed away.
Two suspects die, one escapes
In a follow-up operation, Carmen police arrested Carlito Jayson and his brother Ricardo.
Their other brother Jaime, meanwhile, was able to escape.
However, while inside the police station, Ricardo reportedly grabbed the firearm of a policeman. He was then shot to death. A policeman was injured.
Carlito on the other hand allegedly grabbed the firearm of another policeman while they were on their way to the supposed hideout of Jaime. Carlito was also shot to death.
Flag at half-mast
A day of mourning was declared in Catmon after Nuñez's death.
The flag at the municipality's capitol was lowered at half-mast as residents mourned.
Nuñez's wife called for justice and urged Jaime to surrender to authorities. —KG, GMA News
