4 reported killed, hundreds hurt in strong Surigao Norte quake

Four people were reported killed and several hurt in the  magnitude-6.7 quake that struck 14 kilometers northwest of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte at 10:03 p.m., Friday.

Quoting Surigao City Vice Mayor Alfonso Casurra, GMA News correspondent Natz Corbeta told dzBB that the death toll from the quake has risen to four as of 8:30 a.m.

Some of the injured were brought to the Caraga Regional hospital, Corbeta said. 

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the quake was tectonic in origin and had a Depth of Focus of 4 kms.

The quake was felt at:

Intensity VI in Surigao City; and Pintuyan, Southern Leyte;
Intensity V in Mandaue City; San Ricardo, Limasawa  and San Francisco, Southern Leyte;
Intensity IV  in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; and Butuan City;
Intensity III in Hibok-hibok, Camiguin, Tolosa and Tacloban, Leyte; Bislig City; and Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental; and
Intensity II in Cagayan de Oro City; Talocogon City, Agusan del Sur; Dumaguete City; Cebu City.

Phivolcs also reported that under Instrumental Intensities, the quake was measured at:

Intensity II in Bislig City; and
Intensity I in Cebu City and Cagayan de Oro City.

Meanwhile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said on its website that there was no tsunami threat from the earthquake. 

Damage to infrastructures

Earlier, the Office of the Civil Defense reported initial damage to infrastructures, including the Anao-aon Bridge in San Francisco town, rendering it non-passable.

Also, it said some houses in Barangays Baya-ag and Biabid in the town of Sison as well as in the town of Mainit were also damaged. There were reports of damage in some school buildings in Surigao City.

Rescue operations are ongoing in Barangay Washington in Surigao City where several people are trapped inside a collapsed building.

A power outage was reported in Surigao City and the municipalities of Malimono, Mainit, Sison, San Francisco, and Taganaan.  — BAP/LBG, GMA News
