Leyte woman dies after injuring leg during quake

A woman was killed in the town of Kananga, Leyte following the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that struck the island of Leyte.

In a report by Mariz Umali on "24 Oras," on Friday, the victim was identified as Nerelyn Remedio. She had previously been in critical condition after a leg injury during the tremblor.

This left the town with two fatalities after a certain Jerry Novilla, 42 died on Thursday after his left leg was also gravely injured. Novilla also lost his left arm.

Earlier, the town of Kananga was placed under state of calamity in the wake of the destruction caused by the earthquake.

"We have declared this morning state of calamity para po sa quick response namin," said Vice Mayor Elmer Codilla.

The report said authorities are now conducting aerial inspection to assess the extent of damage brought by the earthquake.

The local government also vowed to provide assistance to the families of the victims, the report added. —Anna Felicia Bajo/JST, GMA News
