The Legazpi Domestic Airport was temporarily shut down on Monday after Alert Level 4 was raised over Mayon Volcano.

According to a notice to airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the Legazpi airport was temporarily closed down effective 2:21 p.m.

This comes after Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised Alert Level 4 over the volcano, indicating that a hazardous explosion could happen in a matter of days, or even hours.

The NOTAM will be valid until 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, but will be renewable every day depending on the activity of the volcano.

Among the affected flights are Cebu Pacific's Manila-Legazpi and Mactan-Legazpi trips.

"CAAP advised pilots flying near the area to exercise extreme caution, as ash from volcanic eruption can be hazardous to the aircraft," it said. —ALG, GMA News
