Newly-elected barangay chairman in Batangas shot dead by riding-in-tandem suspects


A newly-elected barangay chairman was shot dead Monday morning by unidentified riding-in-tandem suspects in San Jose, Batangas, a report from the police provincial office said.

The victim identified as Demetrio Mendoza Deomampo, 51, won the recently concluded elections on May 14 as chairman of Barangay Buso-Buso in Laurel, Batangas.

He was gunned down by the suspects onboard a black motorcycle at 8:25 a.m. in Barangay Pinagtung-Ulan in San Jose.

Deomampo was on board of his vehicle and was on his way to the national highway from his rest house in Barangay Pinagtung-Ulan when he was shot several times by the unidentified suspects.

The victim was declared dead on arrival according to Police Regional Office 4A director Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar.

The police said that the suspects used a caliber .45 pistol and fled going to Lipa City.

Asked on whether the killing will be investigated as an election-related incident, Eleazar said: "All angles will be considered initially." — Marlly Rome Bondoc/RSJ, GMA News
