Detour bridge collapses, leaves motorists in Mindoro Occ. stranded

Rampaging flood waters of a swollen river in Occidental Mindoro caused a detour bridge to collapse, leaving several residents and motorists stranded in Calintaan town.

"Unang Balita" reported Thursday that continuous heavy rains due to the effects of Tropical Depression Domeng and other weather systems caused the Marilao River to swell, with flood waters eroding away the detour bridge.

Public Works officials are now preparing to repair the bridge, the report said.

The Marilao Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has already deployed teams of rescuers to assist the stranded residents, it added.

Earlier, state weather bureau PAGASA said a monsoon trough will be affecting Luzon and the Visayas, as Domeng  maintained its speed and direction overnight.

Calabarzon, Mimaropa, the Bicol Region, Western and Eastern Visayas and the provinces of Aurora, Bataan, and Zambales will have cloudy skies with moderate occasionally heavy rains and isolated thunderstorms due to the monsoon trough, TD Domeng, and southwest monsoon.

PAGASA warns of possible flooding or landslides due to moderate to occasional heavy rains in these areas.

Domeng's center  was estimated at 605 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes. It had maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 60 kph and is forecast to move north-northwest at 15 kph. —LBG, GMA News
