The Philippine military reported that a Marine was killed during a Saturday clash with alleged Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army gunmen in Sultan Kudarat's Kalamansig town.
Troops of Marine Battalion Landing Team-2 were on a security operation in Barangay Sangay after receiving reports of armed men in the area, when the 30-minute gun-battle erupted at 2:50 p.m.
Two Marines were injured by shrapnel during the fight, with one of those injured eventually succumbing to his injuries while in hospital.
"On behalf of the Joint Task Force Central, I also condole to the bereaved family, and our hero soldier for offering his life in fighting terrorism," Joint Task Force Central commander, Brigadier-General Cirilito E. Sobejana, said in a statement.
