1 killed, 3 wounded when SUV hits pedestrian, UV Express in Rizal

One pedestrian was killed while three passengers in a UV Express were injured when an SUV plowed into them in San Mateo, Rizal on Wednesday night.

CCTV footage shows a speeding black SUV at the intersection of Batasan San Mateo Road and General Luna Avenue in Barangay Banaba slamming into a crossing pedestrian, then smashing into the right side of a UV Express.

The UV Express flipped and landed upside-down. Its passengers were able to get out, as did the drivers of both vehicles.

Members and volunteers of the San Mateo Rizal Action Center arrived shortly at the scene to administer CPR on the pedestrian, who remained unresponsive, and the other victims.

One of the UV Express's passengers, who was uninjured but felt nauseated during the interview, told GMA News that the SUV was moving too fast.

Mabilis po 'yung takbo nila, eh," he said. "Kami mabagal lang, kasi alam namin intersection ito eh."

Roland Cruz, the driver of the SUV, said that he lost control of his vehicle due to lack of sleep.

"Hindi ko na po talaga napansin; natulog na po talaga ako, as in kanina pa po talaga," he said.

The injured, including the driver of the UV Express, were brought to the hospital. The still unidentified male pedestrian was declared dead on arrival.

Cruz has met with relatives of the injured victims and vowed to pay for all their hospital bills and expenses. 

Cruz is currently in the custody of the San Mateo Police as they await the relatives of the still unidentified victim to show up and press charges. — BM, GMA News
