Vietnamese vessel impounded in Tawi-Tawi for illegal fishing
Government troops have impounded a Vietnamese vessel for allegedly fishing illegally off Tawi-Tawi, according to the military's Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom).
The Westmincom said joint elements of the Philippine Coast Guard Sub-Station Great Bakkungan and Turtle Islands Municipal Police Station conducted a maritime patrol operation in the waters off Great Bakkungan, Langaan and Boan Islands in Turtle Islands last August 15.
Authorities were able to apprehend one SSEN fishing vessel which was allegedly fishing off Langaan Island. It was discovered that the vessel was manned by four Vietnamese crew members who had no legal documents.
“We encourage each and every Filipino citizen to immediately report to the proper authorities any illegal fishing activity in their area,” Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Westmincom, said.
“Let us be more vigilant and contribute in the conservation and protection of our natural resources,” he added.
The vessel was then towed to Coast Guard Sub-Station Great Bakkungan for further probe.
It is presently impounded in Bongao for the filing of appropriate charges. —Anna Felicia Bajo/KBK, GMA News
