Tornado hits Marawi, destroys structures including roof of city hall

ILIGAN City —A tornado hit areas of Marawi City past 2:00 p.m. Monday, destroying houses including portion of the roof of the city hall in Barangay Fort where the Sangguniang Panlungsod Hall is located.

Jorome Maglahos, executive assistant of Marawi City Mayor's Office, said he was documenting the meeting presided by Mayor Majul Gandamra with the department heads of the local government unit when they heard a rumbling sound outside.

Before they went outside, a strong wind smashed the building and blew the roof away.

"We heard roar of strong winds but there was no rain, just drizzle but it did not last long," Maglahos said.

The meeting was interrupted but was resumed after 15 minutes.

Inside the army headquarters, Colonel Jose Maria Cuerpo, commander of 103rd Infantry Brigade, caught the water formation through his camera and brought it live through his Facebook page.

He was heard shouting "ang mga bata" (the children) to direct the soldiers to secure the children running inside the camp.

Cuerpo said several trees inside the camp were uprooted.

Jamalodin Basman took a video footage at Amai Pakpak Medical Center where the roof of one of the houses was also blown away.

Maglahos said no injuries has been reported but Mayor Gandamra has directed the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to assess the damages. —LDF, GMA News
