10 flood-prone Cagayan barangays being monitored amid storm threat

Residents of 10 low-lying barangays in Sta. Ana town in Cagayan province are on alert against flooding.

GMA News' Jun Veneracion reported Saturday on Balitanghali Weekend that residents in the area were more concerned about flooding than than Tropical Storm Ramon's strong winds.

Last week, Sta. Ana Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) personnel rescued some children trapped in their houses that were flooded.

The sudden rise in floodwater spawned earlier by Typhoon Quiel surprised many residents, according to the report, prompting local authorities to order townsfolk to brace themselves against the coming storm's effects.

Meanwhile, bigger boats have remained anchored at Sta. Ana port on Saturday, but some fishermen still braved the rough seas that resulted in the loss of lives, the report said.

Elsewhere, in Sta. Praxedes town, also in Cagayan province,  14 families were evacuated due to threats of landslide.

As of Saturday, prevailing weather and sea conditions were moderate but fishers were advised to refrain from venturing into the sea. —Joahna Lei Casilao/LBG, GMA News
